List of Oscar Award winners and from India
The prestigious Academy Awards or more popularly known as Oscar Awards are considered as the top most award in the field of cinema. The awards honor the best of cinema from all around the world. India sends an official entry to the Oscars every year, no Indian film has won under the Best Foreign Film category.
While Indian themes have dominated and won at the prestigious awards ceremony (for example, Gandhi and Slumdog Millionaire). However, when it comes to India, there are only a few lucky names who have got the honor of receiving this prestigious award. Here’s the complete list of all the Indians who’ve made the country proud at the Academy Awards.
1. Bhanu Athaiya
Bhanu Athaiya is Indian cinema’s most well-regarded costume designer, having worked in over 100 films. Costume designer Bhanu Athaiya became the first Indian to get an Oscar when she received the Best Costume Design award at the 55th Annual Academy Awards in 1983. She shared the award with British costume designer John Mollo for their work in the film ‘Gandhi’. Bhanu Athaiya continues to be the only Indian woman to win an Oscar. She also won two National Film Awards, in 1991and 2002.
2. Satyajit Ray
Satyajit Ray is considered as one of the greatest directors in Indian (especially Bengali) cinema. Satyajit Ray was honoured with “Honorary Award” at the 64th Oscar Award ceremony in 1992 for his remarkable contributions to the world cinema. He could not attend the ceremony to accept the award due to his illness, and he was in the hospital during that time. Although, he gave his award acceptance speed through a live video feed from the hospital bed. He is the first and only Indian to receive this honorary award.
3. A. R. Rahman
The music maestro is the only Indian who has won Oscar not once but, twice. He was rewarded in the “Best Original Score” and “Best Original Song” category at the 81st Oscar Award ceremony in 2009 for the film “”Slumdog Millionaire”. A R Rahman a household name in India for his contribution to Bollywood, as well as regional cinema from the south, has been the cynosure of all ears since 1992 when he burst on the Indian musical scene with his refreshingly different tunes for the Tamil film “Roja”. Rahman shared the Best Original Score award with Gulzar for his song “Jai Ho.”
Apart from this, Rahman was nominated in the “Best Original Score” and “Best Original Song” category for the film “127 Hours” at the 83rd Oscar Award ceremony in 2011.
The legendary poet and Hindi songwriter Gulzar shared the award with AR Rahman for “Best Original Song”category for film “Slumdog Millionaire” at the 81st Oscar Award ceremony in 2009. Gulzar wrote the lyrics for the song which became a sensation all over the world. However, Gulzar was not there at the ceremony to receive the award. A noted poet who writes eloquent poetry in Urdu, Gulzar collaborated on many occasions with AR Rahman and this combination worked once again for Danny Boyle’s film which walked away with all the major awards that year!
5. Resul Pookutty
Renowned sound designer, sound editor and mixer of Hindi cinema bagged the Best Sound Mixing award at the Oscars and walked away with the golden statue at the 81st Academy Awards. Rasool Pukutty along with Richard Peker and Ian Tape Was awarded in the category of “Best Sound Mixing” for the film “Slumdog Millionaire” at the 81st Oscar Award ceremony in 2009. He has worked in the field of sound designing, sound editing, and mixing.
